There is no doubt that Milstein possessed exceptional skills as a violinist. However, it is also worth noting that the bow plays a very important role to violin playing, and that role is often underestimated. With a good bow, a violinist can create much more colours and dynamics to the music in complement with the violin. Without a good bow, the music produced is limited, and so is the violin and the musician.
If you have the chance, you can watch Milstein’s spectacular performance of the Bach’s Chaconne, and his amazing bowing skills – It is his last public concert at 83 years old, recorded in Berwaldhallen, Stockholm, July 17, 1986.
